The goal of working at heights training is to equip students with the necessary abilities to operate in restricted areas, conduct rescues, and minimize accidents while working at heights.
Plan, organise and control the erection, alteration/repositioning and dismantling of access scaffolding
Integrating knowledge and understanding of access scaffolding and related applications with skills for planning, organising and controlling a range of activities associated with the erection, alteration/repositioning and dismantling of access scaffolding
The qualifying learner will acquire the knowledge and skills required by the industry to function as a scaffold erector. Their functions will include leading a scaffold team. This includes the ability to safely and efficiently deploy the required resources to erect and dismantle access scaffolding. This unit standard will serve, in conjunction with related unit standards, to develop the qualifying learner to function as a scaffold erector in an access scaffold team.
The qualifying learner will acquire the necessary knowledge and skills to inspect access scaffolding for compliance with the South African National Standards (SANS) 10085. This unit standard will serve, in conjunction with related unit standards, to develop the qualifying learner to function as a scaffold inspector.

Integrating knowledge and understanding of suspended scaffolding and related applications with skills for planning, organising and controlling a range of activities associated with suspended scaffolding operations.
Assist to erect, use and dismantle access scaffolding
The qualifying learner will acquire the necessary knowledge and skills to assist in a team to erect and dismantle a basic scaffold system. A basic scaffold system includes access tower, mobile and fixed independent scaffold and bird cage scaffold. The qualifying learner will perform all tasks under supervision and instruction. This unit standard will serve, in conjunction with related unit standards, to develop the qualifying learner to function as a fixer in an access scaffold team.
Supervise the erection and dismantling of access scaffolding
The qualifying learner will acquire the necessary knowledge and skills to control and organise scaffold teams to set up, erect and dismantle all types of access scaffolding. This supervisor of access scaffolding operations will be able to read and interpret drawings, liaise with the client, plan all activities and co-ordinate all required resources. This unit standard will serve, in conjunction with related unit standards, to develop the qualifying learner to function as a scaffold supervisor of access scaffold teams.
Explain and perform fall arrest techniques when working at height
Learners wishing to acquire the competencies in this standard will be, people working at height where there is a risk of injury from a fall. Learners will be involved in performing tasks at height. Qualifying learners are able to follow fall arrest principles to perform work at height safely, under supervision of a qualified supervisor.
Install, use and perform basic rescues from fall arrest systems and implement the fall protection plan
Learners wishing to acquire the competencies in this standard will be people working at height where there is a risk of injury from a fall. Learners will be involved in performing tasks at height. Qualifying learners are able to take responsibility for inspection and installation of fall arrest systems and for implementing fall protection plans and rescues.
